The AI boom is inflating RAM and GPU prices. Here's how to build anyway

The same hardware that trains AI models is the hardware in your gaming PC. Data centres are buying DRAM and high-memory accelerators in enormous volume, and memory makers have shifted production toward the parts that sell best to them. When supply follows the biggest buyer, everyone else pays more. That is why a DDR5 kit and a high-VRAM graphics card both cost more this year than the hardware warrants.

On memory, the cleanest dodge is to build DDR4. Boards on AM4 and older Intel DDR4 sockets are cheap, everywhere, and heavily stocked second-hand, and a fast DDR4 kit still runs current games without holding a good GPU back. On graphics, the squeeze lands hardest on cards with 16GB or more, because that is exactly what AI buyers want. A card with 8GB to 12GB is barely touched by that demand and still plays beautifully at 1080p and 1440p. The move in a spike is simple: buy the tier just below the hype, or hold on a DDR4 machine and wait. Prices settle when production catches up with demand. Until then, a sensible build now beats an overpriced one, and you lose nothing by not paying the AI premium.
